Chasing the Light: A New Zealand South Island Road Trip

Chasing the Light: A New Zealand South Island Road Trip

There is something special about travelling alone with a camera and no real agenda beyond following the light.

For me, the South Island of New Zealand isn't just a destination; it’s a living, breathing masterclass in light, contrast, and the beauty of the unexpected.

My recent collection, Whispers of Winter, is a visual journal of my solo road trip through New Zealand's South Island, beginning in Christchurch and winding south through the Mackenzie Country. With the car packed, a loose route in mind, and plenty of room for spontaneity, the journey became an opportunity to slow down, observe, and capture the landscapes that make this part of the world so remarkable.

It was a trip filled with extremes - from driving through near-zero visibility at mist-covered lakes where the world seemed to disappear, to discovering scenes bathed in the softest golden light and perfect mirror reflections.

The Stillness of the Mackenzie Basin

One of the most profound parts of the trip was spending time in the Mackenzie Basin. There is a deep, heavy silence there in winter that feels almost sacred. At Twizel, the water was so still it was hard to tell where the shore ended and the reflection began. This stillness inspired pieces like Silent Reflections, Twizel and Still Waters Silent Trees Twizel, where I tried to capture that sense of absolute peace.
Driving toward Aoraki, the landscape becomes even more dramatic. The mountains seem to loom larger against the crisp winter sky. My prints Edge of Aoraki and Road to Mt Cook Dreams are my attempts to bottle up that feeling of being small in the face of such raw, pure grandeur.

The Drama of the Passes and Peaks

Crossing the passes is always a highlight, and the Lindis Pass in winter is something truly special. The way the snow clings to the tussocks and contours of the land is mesmerising. You can see this in Mountain Contouring Lindis Pass and Half Dusted Mountains Lindis Pass, where the light plays across the ridges, creating a beautiful, natural geometry.
As I moved toward Queenstown, the weather continued to surprise me. There were moments when the clouds would suddenly break, revealing the rugged peaks of the Remarkables. Remarkables Breaking The Clouds and Whispers Over Wakatipu capture those fleeting seconds where the sun pierces through the gloom, turning a moody day into something cinematic and hopeful.

Bringing the Winter Magic Home

This road trip reminded me that even in the stillness and cold of winter, there is magic to be found if you keep going. Whether it’s the Late Light at Jacks Point or the White Peaks Under Blue Skies, each of these images is a fragment of a moment that moved me.

My hope is that these prints bring that same sense of wonder and quiet beauty into your home. I want them to be an invitation for you to pause, breathe, and imagine yourself standing by a silent lake or under a vast southern sky.

The Whispers of Winter collection is now live, and I can’t wait for you to explore it.

With love,

Jess
